What Are Night Guards?

Nighttime teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common issue that affects many people. While the most visible symptom is wear on the surface of the teeth, nocturnal bruxism may also cause inflammation, headaches, tooth pain, and discomfort in your jaw and neck. To guard your mouth against the effects of bruxism, we provide custom-fit night guards that cover your teeth while you rest. Night guards are made with high-grade materials that comfortably fit in your mouth and can improve the quality of your sleep by reducing grinding and clenching. If you would like to learn more about custom night guards at The Dentist of Allen, schedule a consultation at our Allen, TX dental practice.

What Can I Expect from Using Night Guards?

After an examination, we will take oral impressions and digital x-rays so your custom night guard can be created. We will then send your information to a dental laboratory where your night guard will be created from high-quality materials. When we receive your finished night guard, we will contact you so you can come in for a fitting. We may make minor adjustments so it fits properly and comfortably. We will also give instructions on how to care for your night guard so it will last for years.

For best results, you will need to wear your night guard every night. It should minimize or alleviate the pain and dental issues caused by bruxism, but you should inform our team if it isn't working so that we can explore other solutions. We recommend that you clean your night guard before and after each use to keep it in good condition. We ask that you bring your night guard to all future appointments so we can adjust or repair it as needed.

About Us
Can I use an over-the-counter night guard?

While there are many night guards and dental mouth guards you can purchase over the counter, they may not provide the same level of protection and comfort that is possible with a custom night guard obtained through your dentist. Our professional-grade night guards are made with high-quality materials for enhanced protection against clenching and grinding, and custom impressions ensure a perfect fit that maximizes comfort.

How do I clean my dental night guard?

There are a number of ways you can clean your night guard, including using an over-the-counter denture cleaner, soaking and rinsing with vinegar, water, and hydrogen peroxide as directed, and others. During your appointment to fit your night guard, our dental team will go over detailed instructions on how to best care for your specific type of night guard.

How often should I wear my night guard?

Ideally, patients should wear their night guard all night (while sleeping) every night to obtain the maximum level of protection against clenching and grinding and to enjoy consistent relief from headaches, jaw pain, and other unwanted symptoms.
